The location is great and the courtyard has a lot of charm, but leaving the property takes care because the front door opens right onto the road. We stayed in the Bibliotheque room, which is quite small. The bathroom felt very cramped, and the sofa bed smelled awful, as if it had never been cleaned. The main bed is up on a mezzanine over the kitchenette, reached by a steep ladder, and there’s no room to stand once you’re up there. That sleeping setup makes it unsuitable for older people, and I wouldn’t recommend it for larger dogs either. I wouldn’t recommend this room. Maybe the other rooms are better.

The hosts were warm, and from the bedroom window we could see the cathedral spires. For a pretty apartment right in the town centre, the price was fantastic.

The owner is a super friendly guy who did much of the work refurbishing this old cloister himself. You can spot a bit of DIY here and there, but we liked the atmosphere it gave the place. It’s very central in Laon, with parking nearby, and the interior is cosy, with classic furniture and warm colours. There’s a small but usable kitchen, a nice bathroom and a little living room with a TV. The bed sits in a small loft and has a lovely view of the cathedral at night. The apartment is lovely, though the loft steps may be difficult if you’re less mobile, and you need to be happy making your own meals. We enjoyed our stay immensely.

Laon is a stunning, authentic city and well worth seeing. This magnificent site is listed as a historical monument. The central patio is tastefully decorated in a way that respects the stonework and medieval history, and looks lovely lit up in the evening.
