Take a little time to read about St. Pierre, the volcano, and the prisoner before coming. It helps you understand the story behind this small stone cell, which is extraordinary. What looks like a simple cell was originally built as a powder deposit, so it has thick walls and no windows. Without that background, you might just see some ruins and a little stone cell. The prison cell shown on maps isn’t marked in the right spot, so don’t let that throw you off. It’s past the ruins, at the far right, away from the building. I found the visit incredible. There were no crowds or queues, and entry is free. You can wander around and take in the history. The site was excavated and then left almost untouched for 100 years. Places of interest are rarely this authentic now, so if you find yourself in St. Pierre, don’t dismiss a visit.

The ruins are amazing. It’s hard to imagine Cyparis surviving the volcano.

You can get to the site from Rue du Domaine, the lower main street. The old prison is down a small alley on the right, beside the restaurant. It was destroyed in the 1902 volcanic eruption. Cyparis survived the whole city because he was locked in the dungeon at the far right. You can visit the site free of charge at any time. From here there’s a beautiful panorama over the gray sand beach and Mount Pelée.
