Diamant Beach

We spent a week here through an Air Canada "Vacations" package, and it was no vacation. The hotel, Diamant Beach, had problems from the start. At check-in, the friendly clerk described some policies, including a restaurant by the pool serving breakfast and lunch. There is no restaurant there now, just a space that might once have held one. The room had a coffee maker, but none of the snacks mentioned in some recent reviews. The front desk is staffed only a few hours a day, so arriving after 8pm means nobody will be there. The room smelled like an old gym bag and had a thermal spa sort of feel. The air conditioning only works with the room key, so you can’t leave it running when you go out. The bathroom window wouldn’t close, and none of the windows or doors had screens, even though we’d heard several warnings about a dengue outbreak and mosquitoes. There was mold growing in the tiny shower, so we had to buy cleaning supplies to clean it before showering. The patio door lock on the ground floor didn’t work properly either. Staff had left a wooden stick to wedge it shut. The safe costs 24 Euro per week, and the main door lock was so loose and wobbly that a determined toddler could probably break it in under four seconds. The bed was very hard and uncomfortable. It came with two flat sheets, not even a fitted one, and a mattress protector. There were no blankets, comforter, bedspread, or duvet. The mattress looked like it needed protecting from itself. Outside, the balcony cooking area got dripped on by the air conditioner. The unit was covered in dust and grime, which may explain why it barely worked, and the inside-facing part had mold. We also had to buy dish soap because none was provided, and we wanted to wash the dishes before using them. The wall paint was peeling too. After a couple of days without daily housekeeping, we asked for clean towels. The website does mention no daily service, but the front desk said towels could only be requested every four days, which they claimed meant Thursday. We checked in Saturday, so that math didn’t add up. They also said they’d told us at check-in, but they hadn’t. New garbage bags and toilet paper were only available then, too. Towels, apparently, could only be obtained on Thursday. In the morning we discovered that there were no clean towels, and the shower remained a science experiment. At the end of the stay, we asked to stay a couple of extra hours because of a late flight. They said they could "tolerate" us for a little longer. The pool supposedly closes at 7pm, but other people were still using it; only we were told to leave.
