The stairs are a major thing to consider. There are lots of them leading up to L'Résidence Odalys Le Front de Neige, and no lift, which is awkward with luggage or ski gear. The “ski in, ski out” description can also be misleading. It really only works if you're comfortable getting back on a red run, which may not suit nervous skiers or families with young children. We had a noise problem with other guests, and reception was only open for a couple of hours a day for check-in, so there wasn't anyone available to contact. It made the rest of our stay uncomfortable. The place is basic, as the price suggests. It was warm and clean, the kitchen had what we needed for self-catering, and the staff we met were friendly and helpful. But we weren't told clearly when booking that there'd be no duvets, just sheets and light fleece blankets, or that we'd need to make the beds ourselves. The beds were very firm and the pillows lumpy. We also had to clean the kitchen before leaving, another detail that could have been made clearer. Clearer information, more support outside reception hours, and a more accurate description would help set expectations.

Getting to the apartments can be tough if you're not very mobile. They're high up the hill, with a long walk to the Telecabine and town, and there are many stairs. A pushchair or fitness difficulties could make it hard, although a few rooms are on the ground floor. Parking also looked very busy for visitors, though I didn't drive. The apartments are basic but comfortable enough to sleep in after a day of skiing. Access to the piste is a strong point: it's not quite ski-in, ski-out, but with enough snow you can ski through the woods down to the telecabine. From Milk Hotel, it's a short uphill walk to Front de Neige.

We were just two, and the cheapest studio worked perfectly for us, though I can't imagine fitting four people in there comfortably. It's one of the least expensive places in town and has most of what you need. We only missed a few kitchen and bathroom bits, including a hairdryer and a whisk. The staff were lovely and helpful. You can order baguettes, croissants and other breakfast items at reception. They were good quality and reasonably priced, so worth trying at least once. When we arrived, we had trouble finding the emergency number for getting into the apartment. I'd suggest putting it on the noticeboard with the other numbers.

The location is superb, but getting there with luggage can be a workout. The buildings spread over several floors, well away from vehicle access, and there are no elevators. Parking is limited too, so you have to be in good shape to haul your bags up the many staircases. Calling it unsuitable for disabled guests barely covers it. If you're there to ski, you could treat the climb as a warm-up for the slopes. Inside, the apartments mix original fittings with flashy bathroom updates, but those are still tied into the old plumbing. You can hear, and smell, toilet flushes from neighboring apartments. The tiled floors carry every chair scraping across them through the building, and conversations travel through the floors too.

It feels very cozy, with plenty of character, though the apartments are a bit dated. They seem to have been built about half a century ago.
