Chateau de Maillat

The hotel is a stunning old building, dating back to around 1200, which was a real novelty for us as Americans. Its location was excellent for the Tour de France Grand Depart, just minutes away. The village is charming and small, though there isn't much to see or do near the hotel. The bathroom had been updated, but we couldn't work out the TV, and breakfast was fine. The only restaurant was a truck stop down the road. The food was interesting and the service was excellent.

The place was very quiet and clean, and I slept well. Still, I missed a sense of human warmth. The price felt high for what you get, even for an old castle.

The in-room breakfast was amazing. Fresh bread arrives in the morning, at whatever time you choose, and the rest is already in the fridge. The rooms are spacious and quiet, with a comfortable bed and shower, and the views are great. Most of the service was handled by text. We never met anyone, just got a code for the room. They’re refurbishing some rooms and the church. Calm and quiet, this is a great place to spend a night.

A cosy, very nice hotel out in nature, with friendly staff, clean rooms, and a good mix of old-fashioned style and modern touches. If sleeping in a castle sounds appealing, here's your chance. Geneva and Lyon are within reach, and there are local hiking spots and lakes. The region also offers skiing in winter.
