The room was superb, and breakfast was generous. They serve it from 4 to 10 in the morning, which is impressive. The hotel is right by the gare, though the directions on booking.com could be clearer since the station and hotel are technically in the same zone. After more than four hours on a train, I arrived on a rainy Sunday evening, tired and asking about my booking. French is my third language, and the reception staff corrected my accent and pronunciation. I’m far from perfect, so it was an interesting reminder of life’s imperfections and that my language skills can keep improving. I’ll remember it and work on my speech and spirit before my next visit to an ibis/Accor hôtels, whether for business or leisure. I go to them fairly often and will be back soon.

The entrance needs a key to get in, which matters in a city like Marseille. Still, I felt safe in the area, though it’s worth being careful. The hotel is lovely and modern, with a cool room and good AC. The bed was comfortable, the shower warm and relaxing, and breakfast was nice. I had to leave so early on my last morning that I missed having it again. Staff were good, and I had no problems.

The youthful decor and young staff gave the place the feel of an adult hostel, and I was struck by how diverse the guests were. I liked the breakfast, but it’s limited and the same each day, so after three days it could get dull unless you enjoy routine. I’d expected more room in the bedroom. Apart from the very comfortable bed, there wasn’t much space.

The hotel service was nice. Chahineze was especially good at the cafe bar, taking great care of us with drinks and coffee. She also suggested places to see in Marseille and explained in detail what to visit and do. We were impressed.

I’m a big fan of the Ibis chain, and this hotel has plenty going for it. The staff were friendly and knew their stuff, and breakfast starts at 4 am, which is great. The pillows, though, were awful. They were so soft and squishy that they gave no support. Even after I asked for two more, I still couldn’t get enough height. Some firmer options would be welcome.
