DENIS G.
The Ruhl is expensive, €72 per person and a total bill of 382€ for three, but dinner was lovely and the bouillabaisse was excellent. It came with fresh fish and lovely flavours, and there was plenty to eat. The staff regularly offered more fish soup, so you probably don’t need a starter. We shared the scampi a la plancha special, which was excellent with its generous garlic and parsley sauce. The chef came over to chat and was super friendly, as was the rest of the staff. They welcomed us inside even though we arrived a bit early, and checked in regularly without being intrusive. The dessert cart had some lovely choices. The triffle was excellent; the Castel wasn’t as good as at some other places I’ve tried, like Amandine, but the desserts were nice overall. We also had an exquisite white Cassis with the fish soup. You’ll get a very nice meal and won’t go home hungry. I’d definitely recommend it. Don’t go for the cheaper bouillabaisse options around the harbour, they’re nowhere near the quality at the Ruhl.

Le Rhul’s setting is beautiful and iconic, and the staff were attentive and caring throughout. The fish soup was fresh, light, smooth, and clearly homemade. They serve it without limit, and generously refill the croutons, rouille, and grated cheese too. The prices feel very reasonable for the quality and experience. It’s a legendary place that lives up to its reputation, and a must in Marseille.

Breakfast runs until 11 a.m., and checkout is at noon. It’s a lovely old Marseille hotel with an extremely nice view and an excellent location, just a stone’s throw from endowment coffees and restaurants. You can walk to go for a swim in five minutes.

This review is about the hotel, not the restaurant. Although the sea views are nice, there are many better options in Marseille. The rooms are dated and shabby, and a strong sulfur smell from the bathroom made the stay unpleasant. I reported it to management, but they didn’t resolve it. At around €400, it’s incredibly poor value.

The bouillabaisse was delicious and came in a huge portion. They were also thoughtful about our child, who didn’t eat any fish. Be sure to try the desserts too!
