It’s easy to walk to Plage des Catalans from the city, so even a quick visit is worthwhile. The beach isn’t very big and fills up quickly, but the water is clear and there’s a lively feel to the place. I liked sitting by the water, swimming for a bit, and watching volleyball. It can get noisy and crowded, but it’s fun.

A lovely beach with clean water and facilities, only about a 15-minute walk from central Marseille.

There are toilets, showers, and a changing room here, and we felt quite safe. I did notice some “watchers,” though, and the lifeguards patrolled both the water and the beach to deal with any possible incidents. The sandy beach is beautiful, probably the only sandy one around, but it gets so busy during the day that finding a place to sit can be difficult. That’s the main drawback, though not a surprise.

We visited at the end of March, on a sunny, pleasant day, and sat on the benches looking out at the islands and boats. It’s a small sandy beach about a 15-minute walk from the city center-port. There are set-up courts for volleyball and basketball, too. I imagine it gets packed in summer.

There’s lots of fun to be had here despite the crowds. The water was dirty, and the public toilet smelled bad, but you can still enjoy your time.
