Château de Monhoudou

The children, aged 4 & 6 yrs, were welcome and could eat early before bed. They loved the heated pool, swings and slide, and it was hard to get them to leave. We had a good-sized Blue Room, a comfortable bed and a huge bathroom, with a separate shower in the turret. There was plenty at breakfast, and Wi-Fi worked near the central hallway. In the morning, peacocks, swans and horses grazing by the lake were the view. Cocktails were served in the garden at the front of the château, and after the excellent 'haute table' dinner, we could choose to dine together or at our own tables. Drinks and cigars were available in the drawing room afterwards. The welcome was very friendly, and Monhoudou has a genuinely charming, relaxing feel. There’s an unlit landing strip 150m from the front door, tucked behind some woods, for those with their own wings!

The food was exquisite, and the rooms were comfortable and full of character. It’s a peaceful, unspoilt place for a romantic summer weekend, with a heated covered pool, billiards, bicycles and table tennis. The 14th century château has been in the same family for 19 generations, and there’s a 700 metre grass landing strip with hangarage. Open July to September, Marie-Christine and Michel de Monhoudou give you a warm welcome.

The electricity comes from solar panels installed off-site, which means the estate is completely energy independent. Set in nature, the magnificent château feels wonderfully serene, is perfectly equipped, and Jacques, the owner, is incredibly attentive.

The atmosphere was perfect for a fantastic weekend at Château de Monhoudou, and the setting is magnificent.
