The church was built on a huge scale, with a broad, high single nave suited to preaching, public gatherings and pilgrims staying at the Saint-Jacques hostel across the way. Commissioned by Dominican inquisitors in the 13th century, it has a strikingly austere look and follows the Languedoc Gothic style. The proportions make a strong impression. The steps were added in the 19th century and feel a little at odds with the rest.

From outside, the church looks enormous, with high, solid walls. Inside it’s much plainer and less elaborate. There’s just one chapel, while the other space is used for a small display of ancient artifacts.

The Gothic church in Najac is very imposing, but sadly it was closed when I visited. There’s a car park and playground right across from it. Enjoy the walk.

Set at the edge of the village beneath the fortress, the Church of Saint John has a solid, massive look typical of southern Gothic architecture. It was built between 1258 and 1280, with the bell tower added later, and work continuing into the early 14th century. Go inside if you can, there are some interesting things to see.
