The gate was topped with an upper chamber designed to guard its entrance, with a machicolation for bombarding potential attackers. Covered by a semicircular arch, this beautiful defensive structure dates to the 13th century, the same period as the fortified castle built by Alphonse de Poitiers. It was originally part of the town wall, which remained until the 18th century.
