The lockers were a bright spot, but the office had no locks to rent or buy. We left after just 35 minutes, extremely uncomfortable and disappointed, and found another place, Residence French Riviera. We couldn’t get our money back because refunds go against their customer agreement. The manager gave us a lot of attitude when we tried to check out early. My friend and I had been excited for our holiday in Nice. We’d stayed in hostels before and were prepared to share a dorm with other women. Instead, despite requesting a FEMALE dormitory room, we were put in a small room with two men in their late 30s, and felt very unsafe. The room was disgusting: the bathroom door wouldn’t close, there was no toilet seat, and the toilet barely flushed. The shared bathrooms in the hall looked as if they hadn’t been cleaned in years. Our room was meant to be non-smoking, but the roommates walked through it with lit cigarettes. The website said the rooms had air conditioning, but they certainly didn’t. Don’t waste your money here unless you want a hot, disgusting hostel with inappropriately old men.

The beds were rickety, which I expected for the price, but the rest was awful. The walls were paper thin, and I heard everything in the next room. I saw a cockroach, the staff were rude, and the bathroom smelled like a sewage leak. Luckily there was no hot water to make the smell worse. We had to pay a €30 key deposit, and the place always stank worse than a nightclub urinal in a third-world country. On day two, we heard the manager tell a guest to “get her things and get out” for staying past the 10.30 checkout time. This happened at 10.40. When we went to check out early, we were told to strip the room. Honestly, just don’t go here.

There was no one at reception when I went to check out at 7am, since they only open at 8am. Wi-Fi was poor, they wanted cash for the room and a €30 key deposit, and they weren’t keen on storing bags, though the host eventually agreed to keep mine. I travel often for work and have stayed in both good and bad hotels and hostels. This was the worst experience I’ve had. I felt uneasy just walking along the hotel street, which was full of people drinking and sitting on the pavement. The place was extremely dirty, with cigarettes and broken glass on the three floors up to reception, and there was no elevator. Staff were unfriendly, the toilets were disgusting, and the room conditions felt unsafe. I was in a six-bed mixed dorm, which was a huge mistake. People smoked in the room and made noise every night, banging on doors and beds until I was actually scared. Absolutely terrible.

The owner’s hospitality didn’t make up for the room. After checkout, we were kindly asked to clean it ourselves. The beds rattled enough to wake me, and felt like they were stuffed with newspaper and hay. The walls were so thin I could hear my neighbours, with sounds that haunted me for the rest of my stay. This place would suit someone with the standards of a homeless person in a third-world country.

• WARNING, DO NOT STAY HERE • THE WORST HOSTEL EVER!! The hostel was filthy, and the entrance reeked of urine and smoke. Staff were rude. Our first night, the room was full of people who hadn’t even checked in, making loud noise all night. The next night, people got drunk and vomited everywhere. You can find cheaper places that are much better. This place is a disgrace.
