Getting to the Promenade des Anglais takes about a manageable 20-minute walk, enough to build an appetite and still close enough to limp back after too much local food. My room at Hotel Villa Berlioz was a curious mix. It was nicely decorated and very clean, thanks to the housekeeper. I still fondly remember her warm greeting when I arrived. The hotel itself is modest and unassuming, but its position right next to Nice Ville station is its most dependable advantage. The bed, though, was a nightmare for all five nights. Any small shift set off a whole orchestra of squeaks from the old springs. And the shower had its own daily surprise: lovely hot water for about 3.5 minutes, then it suddenly went cold. Maybe the hot water runs on a timer?
