Today Place Masséna is a broad square lined with red ochre buildings in Italian architectural style. It took its present, more open form after the Masséna Casino was demolished in 1979. Earlier, in 1824, the square was split into north and south sections because the covered Paillon River left Pont-Neuf as the only practical crossing between the old and modern parts of town.
