Bastille Hostel

The rooms were clean, but not comfortable. There's no soap or bath mat for the shower, and the shared toilet is cleaned daily, which is good, but it doesn't even have a toilet seat. You have to rent towels, and you can't get into your room between 11 and 3. At 10:30, while I was having sex, staff came into the room...!?

The room key barely worked. Most mornings after breakfast I had to go back to reception to be let in, and the staff were usually busy with other people, so it took time. They also make you leave the room at 11 AM and won't let you back in until 3 PM, even if you've paid for several nights. Being locked out of a room you've paid for seems unreasonable, especially when it's so small it shouldn't take hours to clean. The heat was miserable too. The AC in my room wasn't working properly during a summer day with 30°C outside, and opening the window did nothing. Reception insisted my room didn't have AC, despite it clearly being there, and acted like I was mistaken instead of helping. There isn't much here beyond a bed, and even that was uncomfortable. The mattress had old stains, some of them looked like blood, and the bed creaked loudly whenever I moved. The walls are thin, so hallway noise carries, including people repeatedly using the tiny bathroom, which you can barely fit into. They didn't have a hair dryer when I asked. Hard to believe in 2025. Breakfast was basically bread and nothing else, so it wasn't worth paying for. I wouldn't recommend this hostel. If you care about comfort, cleanliness, and basic service, look elsewhere. Definitely don't pay for breakfast, and don't book more than one night.

I've stayed here twice and I like the place. The staff are always attentive and friendly. Just remember you can't get into your room from 11 to 3. The setup isn't great for two people, either. A room for two has only one chair, and on the lower bunk only a short child could sit upright. In the rooms with showers there's no hand soap, and you can't wash your hands in the floor's toilet either, though at least there's toilet paper 😉. The building is at an intersection with several bars underneath that stay open until 2 AM, so outside noise could make it hard to sleep. I also took off a star because the listing says there's an elevator, but it doesn't reach the top floor.

Breakfast wasn't worth the price. It was about what you'd get at a gas station for two euro, or 3 US dollars. The rooms had no fans, and the air just sat there like a sauna. We took a lot of cold showers and put frozen water bottles under our armpits to cool off in the evening. The windows look down on a very noisy bar. We could really only sleep from 3 AM until 6 AM, when they started setting up for breakfast. Most of the staff were unhelpful and condescending, though a few were not. A thoroughly miserable stay. Don't stay here.
