The next morning, another staff member was extremely rude and insisted they never take card payments. He said the city tax was €11.20, not €11.06, and the change of amount and story seemed suspicious. I asked about paying by bank transfer, check or invoice, but he ignored me. After I finally collected enough coins to pay, he accused me of “disrespecting” him. Unbelievable. The day before, at check-in, a staff member had told us we could pay the €11.06 city tax by card the next morning because the POS machine was broken. When I tried to explain that, the other man came out from behind the counter and approached me in an aggressive tone, asking what I “wanted exactly.” He's tall, easily over 1m80, and I'm a small woman travelling alone. It was genuinely frightening and completely unnecessary. No guest, especially a woman, should be put in that situation. This was one of the most unprofessional and intimidating hotel encounters I've ever had. I strongly do NOT recommend this place.

We left within a couple of hours of arriving because the conditions were terrible and we felt unsafe. The doors had no locks at all, not even a safety chain. The sheets were dirty and messed up, and the toilet was broken. I'm an aircraft travel engineer and travel a lot, but I've never been SCAMMED like this at Hauteville Opera Hotel. We'd booked it for a family trip with children. PLEASE DO NOT stay here or put yourself and your children in danger.

For a 3-star stay, it was fair. The rooms were a reasonable size for Paris, the staff were nice, and the free breakfast in the wine cellars downstairs was decent: coffee, pastries, bread, salami, ham and cheese. No hot food or eggs, but nothing to complain about. The location was really good, the AC worked well and helped the stay, and daily room service was a pleasant surprise. The small fridge worked, and the bed and pillows were reasonably comfortable. Finding the front door was a struggle. Bushes hid it, there was no visible sign, and even with Google Maps it took a while. I started worrying the place had gone out of business. There were drawbacks. The WiFi came and went and wasn't reliable. The decor and furniture were tired but usable. The bathroom had no ventilation or extractor fan, and no shower curtain, so expect to use one of the few towels to mop the floor. The toilet lid wouldn't stay up. They provided a sort of shampoo, but no conditioner or body wash. One motorised window blind was stuck down. There weren't many outlets, though they did provide a fairly short multi-outlet extension cord. Elevator button lights didn't come on, so you couldn't tell if you'd pressed one. They ask you to leave the traditional room key with them when going out, which is a bit unusual but acceptable. I stayed because I got stuck and everything else was sold out. For that, it was perfectly fine, though there's not much reason to choose it if you have other options. The price could be better for what's offered. With a couple of million euros and someone with a vision, renovations and upgrades could turn this into a really nice place.

WiFi was the main problem. I work remotely and picked the hotel because it was near the train station and Metro, with in-room internet. On the first night, neither my phone nor computer could connect. I had work the next morning, so I spent that time finding a coworking office with reliable internet and lost a lot of work time. Staff tried to help but only said it was working fine, despite none of our devices connecting. They offered to move us, but I worried we'd pack everything only to have the same problem. They also said I could work in the lobby, where the connection seemed good, but when I went down at 5 AM there was no internet. No device connected. Room 304 had two beds, but barely enough space for one person to move around. We were on a two-week European trip with large luggage, plus a laptop and portable monitor in a backpack, so it was tight. There was a small desk, which did the job once I used my phone as a hotspot. I also missed visiting Paris because of the lost work time. The bathroom wasn't good. There was no shower curtain, just a tub and a shower head on about a 1 meter hose, so water gets everywhere even if you're careful. They provided only three towels in total: a floor towel, one large and one small. The toilet seat wouldn't stay up. The room's stonework looked unfinished and there were large tile sheets in the hall, so it seemed the hotel was under renovation. When we arrived late, the hallway lights had no instructions, and we had to use our phones to find the room. I didn't like having to leave the key at the desk each time we went out, then ask for it back. They also lock the door, so you have to ring a bell to be let in and have them unlock it when you leave. The entrance is hard to spot because fake bushes hide it. I'd never stay here again. I hope they improve.

I can only speak about room 501, but honestly, this is the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. The room was tiny and expensive, with a moldy smell and a hint of sewage. That smell stayed on our clothes for days. The beds weren't clean, with human hair on the sheets, and the AC unit looked as if it hadn't been cleaned in years. We didn't dare turn it on. The bathroom was the smallest I've ever seen. Its faucet was loose and the showerhead was broken. There was no ventilation, just a tiny bathroom window that wouldn't close. Noise from nearby fans made it very hard to sleep. The room was warm, and the balcony door barely shut. The entrance was nearly impossible to identify, overgrown with plants and without a sign or anything to guide you, basically just a hole in the wall. The elevator felt shady, made noises, and its floor buttons barely worked. Thankfully, we found another hotel and saved our Paris trip. I can't understand how this place has 3 stars. Avoid at all costs!
