Relais de Lyon by Malone

The room’s condition fell well short of what I’d expect from a listing that calls the property 4-star. I documented the problems extensively in photographs. There was mold on the walls and peeling paint, cracked window glass, and damaged, cracked furniture. The wiring in the wardrobe looked dangerous to users and could pose a fire safety risk. Cleanliness and hygiene were poor: musty smells in both the bathroom and room, dirty marks on the carpets, cobwebs in several places, dusty walls, and dirty doorframes and windows. The bathroom also smelled strongly of cigarettes despite the room being designated non-smoking. The air conditioning didn’t work, some lights were missing or inoperable, and there was no desk despite the listing saying there would be one. There was no iron or ironing board either. In my view, the condition didn’t meet basic standards for a property of this class and didn’t match the platform listing.

Beatrice at reception was lovely, friendly and happy to help. When I explained that my friend couldn’t come after all, even though I’d paid for two, she upgraded me to a better room. The hotel’s location is good, with two Metro stops nearby and Le Marais and Bastille within walking distance, which I loved. Still, I was very disappointed for the price of three nights. This doesn’t feel like a 4-star hotel, barely a 3-star to me. My room was tidy and clean, but the hallway, balcony outside it and rooftop were dirty, with weeds growing everywhere. The place wasn’t well maintained. Breakfast was basic and served in a windowless basement room that made me feel like I was staying in a hostel. When I asked the waiter about olive oil or extra bread, he wasn’t helpful and seemed grumpy.

I was feeling a bit under the weather and arrived before check-in time. The receptionist offered me another room and even upgraded me.

The staff were lovely, and the location works well if you prefer a more residential part of town. I can’t figure out why a shower over a tub about 3 ft./~89cm. high has no full shower door. The stepladder is baffling too.
