Right in the heart of Paris, Notre-Dame Cathédrale is an iconic, charming place. It’s easy to find, close to Train station Saint Michel Notre Dame.

The Seine views and the Saint-Michel fountain make this a lovely place to stop or meet someone. Around Saint-Michel Notre-Dame, lively cafes and charming streets sit among beautiful historic buildings, with Notre-Dame Cathedral nearby. It’s a busy, energetic corner of Paris, and a great area to wander through and explore.

We found it closed when we visited, but seeing one of the oldest Gothic cathedrals was still memorable. Don’t miss the facade and stained glass windows.

The cathedral was closed to visitors when I knew it, with restoration underway after the 2019 fire damaged the roof and spire. Even so, it’s a striking Paris landmark, and I hope to see it in person when it reopens. On the Île de la Cité in the Seine, Notre Dame is easy to reach by metro or bus to Cité or Saint-Michel, or by walking along the river. Its Gothic design includes pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses, along with chapels and side altars decorated with sculptures and paintings. The rose windows on the north, south, and west facades show scenes from the Bible and the lives of saints in stained glass. Inside, the Great Organ has over 8,000 pipes and is played during mass and special events. The architecture, glass, and history make it an unforgettable place.

The cathedral is impressive, though it still hasn’t opened. In the meantime, some artists entertain the crowd with rollers.
