Dominique and Jean-Francois Charlet make this place feel every bit as special as the scenery. Bechanou sits in the countryside near Plazac, in a landscape as beautiful as the wider Dordogne, and the warmth and charm are part of the place. Dominique's cooking is spectacular. We needed more than five stars.

It gets really noisy sometimes because someone nearby plays opera music at a very high volume.

The breakfast itself was generous, with homemade breads, several jams, fruit, yogurt and cheese, plus excellent crepes one morning. The hosts are charming and very attentive, and share lots of visiting tips, especially at the single breakfast table where everyone gathers. With Covid-19 risks ongoing, though, that setup didn't feel ideal. We would have liked the option to eat separately, preferably outside, and enjoy the morning air. There's plenty for children around the large pool, which is slightly salty and fairly warm. The owner covers it each night. Lots of loungers are available, and there's a shower for before and after swimming, with soap and a working faucet. Wi-Fi reaches all the rooms, though it's only acceptable, and the bedding is adequate. Dressers give you somewhere to put your things. Guests can use a refrigerator in the garage to keep food or put together a picnic for the next day, and picnic utensils are free. For the price, the rooms could use air conditioning; the summer heat in this region is hard to handle. The bathroom decor is also dated and could do with an update. Getting to the house means crossing an unpaved road that's too narrow for two vehicles to pass and has a very high center. It's not suitable for low-clearance cars, and I was glad I didn't have to meet another guest's car on it.

The truffle weekend in February is an experience I'll never forget. Every dish was even better than the one before, and Dominique and Jean-François were wonderful hosts. Béchanou is a magical place to recharge, with beautiful, high-quality rooms and bathrooms throughout the guesthouse. I'd happily come back and share it with people I love. Thank you for such an incredible weekend. I highly recommend it!

We especially loved the breakfasts, and the hosts were incredibly kind, always ready with useful advice. The guesthouse is exceptionally clean and comfortable, and very well located. The pool is in a perfect spot.
