The shared kitchen and bar felt so unclean that we didn’t want to eat or spend time there. There was a bucket of yellow liquid with flies around it, and the whole property smelled strongly of smoke. Our room was just as bad. There were hairs in the beds, stains on the sofa bed, and tea and coffee marks left on the counters. The bathroom lock was broken and hanging off. There were no curtains, and outside the window we saw what looked like animal excrement smeared across the window area. With the room on the ground floor, there was no privacy. The garden was neglected, with rubbish scattered around and what appeared to be a dead pigeon on the grass. When we arrived, a dirty man handed us the keys by throwing them towards us. We later found out he was the owner. There was no real check-in, and unclear door numbers meant we had to try several doors before finding our room. After a very long drive to the mountains, we had hoped for a restful stop. Instead, the cleanliness and basic organisation were far below what we expected from a hotel. I’d never stay here again and wouldn’t recommend it.

The dinner situation sent us looking elsewhere. The fixed €27 menu had no choices, and we were told it was essentially three courses of horse, which didn’t work for our vegetarian child. Finding another place to eat in the middle of nowhere was hard. El Pesto looked lovely, but was full. We ended up at O Petty Crew, a truck-stop burger restaurant, and it was the best part of the evening. The family running it were welcoming, the food was great, especially the pizza, and another English family from the Logie turned up too. They don’t serve alcohol, though, and we did feel we needed something when we got back to sleep at the Logie. We asked reception for a different room after seeing the first one. The owner did try to help and moved us to two others. They were a little better, but the beds still had hairs and didn’t seem freshly made. The family room had a stained sofa bed, a bathroom door without a handle or lock that looked as if it had been kicked in, and marks in the second bedroom we didn’t want to inspect too closely. Outside its window was a muddy farmyard with a broken-down car, geese and chickens, and a smell so strong we had to shut the window. Then an enormous black goat suddenly appeared at the window and stared in, which made someone scream. Even the grounds were a mess: scattered chairs and tables, old barbecues plugged in on the lawn, and a large unplugged fountain with a reclining naked woman leaning at an alarming angle. What we first thought was a dead pigeon turned out to be a decoy. The car park was muddy, a fierce dog barked at the gate, and the man who greeted us looked as though he’d come straight from roadworks, covered in what looked like excrement. He barely grunted, silently pointed to a key, gestured at the garden, and disappeared. We had to search for our room because many door numbers were missing. We’d driven a long way back from the mountains toward the ferry, hoping for the quaint French country stay shown on the website. Instead, it was a catastrophic stopover. We only read the Google reviews afterwards, and they were accurate. The place is memorable and almost funny in hindsight, but arriving exhausted late at night and wanting somewhere clean and comfortable was a complete disaster. Avoid.

The young man at reception was a big help, and there’s a good Mediterranean restaurant across the road. Breakfast was filling and included in the family rate, with bread and toast, jams, yogurt, cereal, juice, tea and coffee. The beds were comfortable, and there were lots of outlets.

We really enjoyed our stay. The room was very spacious, dinner tasted good and was made with products from the farm. The owner was friendly and sang in the evening. It’s a very pleasant place.

The room and bed were comfortable, and the heating was good for this time of year. Dinner was lovely on a Monday evening, with the owner singing and playing piano. The meal felt worthy of a Logis hotel and used local produce, including ingredients from his own farm. He’s fantastic and clearly enjoys spending time with his guests. Thanks, Alain! I’ll definitely come back with my partner if we’re in the area again.
