We found the hotel on booking.com, but booked directly through its website. I thought the owners would appreciate avoiding the booking.com commission. The next day, though, the hotel emailed to push us toward a pricier sea-view room, saying there supposedly wasn’t space for a baby bed in the room we’d booked. That didn’t make sense to me. booking.com showed a baby bed as possible in our 18m room. The sea-view room was 20m, only 2m larger, so I doubt that would make much difference. I also saw that the sea-view room cost 100 euros more on booking, but 200 euros more on the hotel’s own site. I tried to get in touch, but they weren’t helpful, so I cancelled. The cancellation confirmation wasn’t clear, and when I emailed to ask whether everything was in order, they refused to answer. On the phone, the woman was very rude and kept talking about booking.com, even though I’d booked directly through the hotel website. She hung up in the middle of our conversation when I asked her to confirm the cancellation by email. The attempt to steer us into a more expensive room felt very wrong. I’ve also read reviews from someone who booked breakfast with a room, then was told at check-in it wasn’t included because the room rate was too low, and a more recent review about unfair price changes after booking. I can relate to those experiences. In response to the owner: as I said, I cancelled after you tried to push us into a more expensive room. Your reply seems to confirm the main issue, that you refuse to listen to your customers. I have the emails to prove everything.

We travelled by train, bus, and boat using the fantastic Izilo public transport network, and went hiking all around the hotel from one beach to another. Everyone was so kind and helpful. Our room was beautiful, simple, and elegant, and really comfortable. We had exquisite breakfasts every morning. It was a dream holiday, thank you so much!

Our April 2025 stay was perfect, just like the other times we’ve stayed at Hôtel de la Citadelle over the years. We were in the suite this time, with two spacious bedrooms, a cozy living room and TV, and a huge bathroom with a luxurious bathtub, rain shower, and our own private sauna. Everything was spotless, well cared for, and very comfortable. The hotel is right in the heart of Port-Louis, Brittany, so it’s easy to get around the charming town and enjoy the sea views. Breakfast was wonderful, especially the homemade cakes we always look forward to. Caroline and Jean-Michel were welcoming and professional as ever, and lovely to talk with. We can’t wait to come back.

The food was delightful, easily one of the best meals we’ve had in this area, and we’ve tried quite a few places. Don’t miss eating here. The hotel was clean and quiet, and on Saturday morning there’s a market right outside with amazing fruit and olives. The people running it were friendly, and we were very happy with our stay.

The hotel is in a good location, but it left a bad impression of an otherwise lovely town, Port-Louis. At midday, while we were having lunch, the front desk staff, who I think were the owners, called and demanded that we check out immediately. We sent one person back to the hotel in the middle of lunch to do it. They still added a late checkout charge to the bill, and were coldly rude during checkout. Not very French, really. Maybe they act this way because it’s the only hotel in Port-Louis and has little competition.
