The private beach was stunning, with a breathtaking view toward Ajaccio, only a 15-minute drive away. We also found lovely beaches, cafes, and ocean walks to the south, around Isollela and Plage Agosta. Le Maquis felt elegant and refined without being stuffy. My wife and I loved its old-world charm and sophistication. Everything was immaculately kept, from the gardens and pools to the beach, bar, and library nooks. Our room sat above the sea and came with a beach bag, robes, and slippers. The staff were friendly and attentive, getting to know us while staying almost invisible. It was a heavenly stay.
The evening turndown was a nice touch, with water and snacks left in the room, and housekeeping did a very good job. Some staff were as professional as you'd expect at a five-star hotel. But I expected that standard throughout, especially at these prices. When we arrived with our luggage and seemed lost in the parking lot, the receptionist got out of a car and said nothing. One of her colleagues did come out of an office to ask if we needed help. Later, a man who seemed to be looking after guests kept chatting from his hut while we watched the sunset on the private beach. He never asked whether we needed anything, and the background chatter spoiled what could have been a peaceful end to the day. Our room faced the garden, with a balcony overlooking the entrance and car park beside a busy road. I don't fault the room for that, since you get what you pay for, and with the windows closed we couldn't hear the road. Some sea-facing rooms look stunning, though I think those must be the superior rooms. A few other rooms face the sea above the restaurant. The restaurant was almost empty both nights, even though I believe the hotel was quite full. It has an old-school feel, which has its good and bad sides. Management should make sure every staff member delivers five-star service for what they charge.
Meals on the terrace were the highlight for me. Everything was exceptional, with fresh local flavors and beautifully presented dishes, all enjoyed against lovely sea views. The setting made the stay feel special too: Le Maquis Hotel is just steps from the beach, beside a peaceful, private-feeling cove. My room was roomy, with a balcony over the water, and had a warm, elegant feel that made me comfortable right away. The staff were genuinely welcoming and attentive, always happy to go out of their way. Between the food, quiet beach, and friendly atmosphere, I had a wonderful stay and can't wait to return.
We came the day after the hotel had stayed open in December for the Pope's visit, when everyone else was leaving. After that, we were the only guests, so we had time to get to know the excellent staff. The place feels like a warm, welcoming home, filled with antiques and art, and its location is amazing. Our room was in excellent shape and very well equipped, despite what some other comments say. We also enjoyed the beautiful heated indoor pool, and both the food and service were superb. It's very expensive, but don't dwell on the prices, just enjoy it. Highly recommended.
The location is beautiful and the staff were kind, but the hotel feels dated and needs a makeover. After staying in many five-star hotels around the world, we found the atmosphere and pricing here out of step. The rates don't feel realistic, and charging extra for breakfast items like eggs or cappuccino is absurd. The unusually high room-service surcharge also doesn't meet expectations.
