Michel was particularly pleasant and kind, but the rest of our 11-night August stay was very disappointing. The place might suit a night or two, but I wouldn’t choose it for a longer visit. Breakfast was the same for all 11 days: the same croissants and yogurts, with just 10 grams of butter for five people and very little variety. There wasn’t even orange juice on the table, and we had to ask several times for more butter. When we politely asked for a spread besides the four partly eaten jams the hostess had provided, we were told that spread, eggs, or anything else counted as an “extra.” The hostess was completely inflexible and rather stingy about breakfast. There was no proper common room, just a very small room with a small desk and two chairs. My girlfriend’s room and mine had dead bugs all over the ceiling, and the sheets hadn’t been washed for 11 days. We also had no access to a refrigerator, which is simply unacceptable for an 11-day stay. We couldn’t freely use the terrace either. The hostess repeatedly suggested we buy at least one of her drinks to earn the privilege of eating there, another of her famous “extras.” Parking took repeated insistence too: we wanted to leave a car downstairs instead of at the nearest free lot, which is about a 10-minute walk up a steep 124 steps. That’s very inconvenient when carrying luggage or belongings after a day out. I absolutely don’t recommend this place.

For one night, perhaps, since the place is pretty and Michel is very nice. But over our 11-day holiday, it was the biggest disappointment my sister and I have had in the 10 years we’ve been going away. There were five of us, and the particularly unpleasant, stingy hostess seemed completely unresponsive to holidaymakers’ basic needs. There was no real common room, and during our stay nobody cleaned the rooms, bathrooms, or showers. When we raised it after five days, Marie Christine said there was no cleaning and handed us a broom. Breakfast was disastrous, and stayed that way for all 11 days. The hostess showed no warmth as the days went on, to the point where coming back in the evenings felt unpleasant. That’s absurd for a bed and breakfast.

Luckily, the weather was sunny. The two-day stay for five couples was disappointing and poor value for money. The decor didn’t look like the photos, and the comfort was basic, with rough linens and poor bedding. Breakfast was deplorable: one baguette for ten people, nine croissants for ten, and day-old bread slices that we had to ask for. The hostess was too bossy and intrusive. What a shame!

We had the garden’s jams and candied figs, and the plum juice, if there’s any left, is unforgettable. The house is tucked away, yet very close to the city center, and has a picturesque feel. We stayed in the Van Gogh and Cezanne rooms, inspired by the painters’ work. Both hosts are art history specialists, and we had lovely, informative conversations, with plenty of mutual curiosity and exchange. A very warm welcome.

What a lovely, peaceful little corner of paradise. Marie-Christine’s fig jams were delicious at breakfast, and she shared her best tips for exploring the Ardèche and its wonders. A warm welcome. SUPER!
