Hostellerie Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre

The breakfast was what stayed with me most: a buttery croissant, one per person, sweet white muscat grape juice from the inn's vineyard, and fresh, moist, buttery kougelhopf, an Alsatian cake made in-house. The rooms are full of charm, each with its own wallpaper and character. Mine faced the street and had a lovely sitting room, a spotless private bathroom and a comfortable vintage bed. The church bells from the nearby Catholic and Protestant churches seemed to ring throughout the day, from 7am to 8pm, though I suppose that's part of small-town life. When I stayed several years ago, there was no elevator, and the staircase turned sharply. There was no porter, so anyone with big suitcases should be ready to carry them up at least two flights, if they're lucky. Within a short walk is a California redwood tree said to have been transplanted by Napoleon III after he traveled to the Americas in the 19th century.

We stayed for two nights, and it was a special experience. The two "ladies of the house" were enchanting. The house itself is fantastic, and staying there felt like stepping back a hundred years. It was delightful and suited Ribeuville perfectly in the run-up to Christmas. Highly recommended if you want something out of the ordinary!

The breakfast was a real highlight, with homemade and local products. We also loved the peaceful feel of the place and the beautifully decorated Alsatian house. We received such a warm welcome, and I’d happily come back one day.
