The old building looked lovely at first, but the stay became a nightmare. When I was washing my hair, I realised the shower was blocked and water had risen to my ankles. It flooded beyond the shower, and I had to use all our towels to soak it up. By then it was 11:30 at night, there was no staff on standby, and my partner couldn’t shower. The room hadn’t been cleaned properly either. Earlier, the access code we’d been given didn’t work, and the woman on the phone didn’t know the difference between the first floor and the ground floor. In the morning I called, and we were moved to the first floor, but that new code failed too before we eventually got in. A strong musty smell hit us, and leaving the windows open all day didn’t clear it. The room was dusty, and the coffee machine water looked ancient, with the tank a quarter full and full of limescale. The worst part came at bedtime: the bed was covered in bugs. I checked with my phone torch and saw bugs all over the dusty top of the headboard too. I couldn’t sleep there, and it was too late to call. The old code apparently still worked for the ground-floor room we’d used the first night, so that’s where we slept. After checkout I emailed photos of the bugs. They replied that they were harmless insects that live in the wood on the ceiling. If that’s their view, they should say on their website that guests in the first-floor room share it with these creepy hosts, so people can decide for themselves. I couldn’t get out fast enough. Avoid this place like the plague.

The building has been restored in its original style, and stepping inside really feels like going back in time. It’s very romantic. Given its age, the house isn’t well insulated, but when we called from our chilly room on arrival, with -5°C outside, the owner brought us a portable heater. Everything was spotless, the bed was comfortable, and the little kitchen was perfect for breakfast. We’d gladly return! ☺️

Booking at the last minute, I called and got a very pleasant response. They explained the purchase was through Booking.com, which I never use. Once the reservation was made, I called again, and the young woman confirmed it and gave me the codes for the outside door and the room, plus the floor. The door and room used the same code. The building itself is a heritage gem, and the exterior charmed me. I got goosebumps walking inside. The place is a magnificent, cozy retreat in an old style, and I slept really well. It met my expectations perfectly and left me rested enough to visit Rouen and the Maison Sublime, which I’d come specifically to see and which you have to book. Coffee, tea, and herbal tea were set out in the bedroom lounge area, very handy. Thank you! 😀

I booked the cancellable option on Booking.com, yet €313.20 was charged straight away. I contacted the property through the site right away, and they told me they wouldn't return the money. Terrible presentation.

The place is a beautiful medieval-style apartment, clean and comfortable, and I’d happily visit again. Just know it works more like an Airbnb, with a self-service setup rather than a formal welcome.
