The room had a kitschy, fun look, but it lacked coffee-making facilities and a couple of things were broken. Some choices felt like corner-cutting, such as the reused flip-flops, and the toiletries didn’t feel premium. The expensive breakfast also became an awkward point, as if we were at fault for declining it. We’d picked this remote place for Joséphine à Table, only to be told on arrival that they wouldn’t open the restaurant for a single reservation. Instead we were offered a five-course “experience,” shared between two people, for 50% more than a Michelin-Bib Gourmand meal we’d had a few days earlier. There was no fish course, and the main meat was just one small slice of duck breast each. Dessert wasn’t included, and the supposedly local wine by the glass was very expensive. Dinner and a night’s stay came to €360 before breakfast, and we spent nearly €400 in the end. It was the most expensive night of our two-week trip in France, and our least favorite. For that price, the value just wasn’t there. We wished we’d stayed another night at the chateau, where local champagne was €7 a glass and the room cost a quarter as much.

Breakfast was a lovely end to the stay, with homemade confiture and yoghurt, great pastries, a high-quality range of teas, and warm service. The hotel also has two good restaurants, a bistro and a gastronomic one, so it’s certainly worth stopping over. We usually book 5-star hotels, but couldn’t find one in this part of the Beaujolais, so we tried Auberge du Paradis and were pleasantly surprised. The welcome was genuinely friendly and warm. We had the Sesame room, which was spacious and in perfect condition, with an architecturally interesting layout, lots of light, and a ceiling that rises to six meters. The bathroom is open to the room. The small touches were well considered too: a very large toiletry selection, stylish reading lights by the bed, and a big, surprisingly comfortable shower.

Everyone we met was so kind, and both restaurants were fantastic. Breakfast was one of the best spreads we’ve had. We stayed in the Jeanne room, which was spotless and had everything we could need, from toiletries to Damann tea. Such a treat to stay here. We’d absolutely recommend this wonderful little spot.

The meal was the best I’ve ever had, even after eating at pretty much every top restaurant in New York City over the past ten years. My wife and I may well make another trip to France just to come back here, no joke. The decor is meticulous, and the owners are such nice people. You must, must, must eat at the restaurant. Simply phenomenal.

The place was clean, the staff attentive and friendly, and the pool area and views were okay. But it was too expensive overall, and the Michelin-starred restaurant wasn’t worth the money. The cooking was creative, though the dishes didn’t feel in harmony. There was no wine pairing with the set menu, just one uninspiring wine by the glass for each course. They said they were out of crémant in Bourgogne. The only white was a mediocre Saint Veran served from a bag-in-box. I was really dissatisfied.
