Lauren made our lovely one-night stay at Chateau Mentone feel especially welcoming. She was so kind and warm, and we really appreciated the wine tasting. Everything ran smoothly, and the team handled all our requests with ease. We’d happily come back ✨

A relaxed lunch on a lovely terrace, with no sense of being rushed. The setting is stunning, and the food and wine were excellent. Given the quality, the prices felt sensible too. We came with family and all enjoyed it.

The setting was beautiful, but lunch was a letdown. It was midweek and busy without being full. Of the six things we ordered, two starters, two mains and two desserts, only two were okay. They weren’t special, but at least they were edible; we couldn’t even finish half of the others, and they looked as bad as they tasted. That’s why we’re puzzled by the Michelin rating. Maybe the chef was away that day and someone else had to cook. I wouldn’t recommend it.

The chateau itself is beautiful and secluded, and we enjoyed the local bike rides. We stayed six nights in June. The hotel dinners were delicious and popular, so book ahead. The wines were drinkable, though nothing special. Breakfast, on the other hand, was a very basic packaged meal for €18; we’d have preferred breakfast at Le Grange in Lorgues. When we missed a couple of dinners, staff kindly lent us a board and knives so we could eat local cheese in the common area. One night I went looking for reception to borrow knives again. The building was open and seemed empty. I called out several times, then took two knives from the restaurant, unaware that this would trigger an alarm. A male staff member, with whom I’d already had an unpleasant interaction, came into the common area, slammed plates onto the bar and shouted at me for causing him stress. Other guests were stunned. He also scolded me for parking outside, though I’d used the same spot as the other guests. I was shaken and cried. I later learned he was one of the owners. Making a pregnant guest cry is a terrible look for an owner. The next day reception sincerely apologized for not telling us we were alone and for leaving the building open. I forgive the staff, who were lovely, and mistakes happen. Still, I spent the night awake and crying after the owner’s treatment, and had paid £200 for the stay. It was the worst hotel experience of my life. I feel for the staff who have to deal with him every day; he’s lucky to have such a nice team.

The grilled fish at the Sunday rotisserie was perfect, with a subtle rosè from the estate alongside it. Portions were just right and there was plenty of variety. One of the best meals I’ve had around here.
