The rooms are lovely, and I’ve stayed twice because of the location. But the food and service are awful. Stay there, just eat somewhere else.

The place is run-down, and the owner seemed completely uncaring and incompetent. A very bad experience. I wouldn’t stay there again.

We waited ages just to order a drink while the owner chatted with the regulars. There was no greeting or offer to help. Dinner was just as frustrating: we had to ask three times for the charcuterie platter, then waited an hour to be served. The owner stayed indifferent throughout, and we got no cutlery, napkins, water jug, or bread. The charcuterie wasn’t fresh and smelled and tasted awful. The tray was slimy, and I threw everything up that night. The cold treatment of us as dinner customers made the whole experience even worse.

Saint-Calais is well worth seeing, and the hotel looks out over a peaceful square with the river just a short walk away. It’s a charming, welcoming place. The first weekend of September brings the historic Apple Turnover Festival, too.

The room was spacious, with a comfortable bed and a quiet atmosphere. It also had a TV, kettle, and instant coffee. The carpet had some stains, and the bathroom had no mixer tap. There’s a large parking lot right beside the hotel.
