La Belle Demeure

La Belle Demeure is a perfect base for exploring the Dordogne, and this cheerful trio filled our time with good company, laughter, and good food. The three I’ll remember most are the hosts, Philippe and Richard, and Lennox, their very, very good dog. Richard cooked some of the best meals we had on our vacation in France. Philippe gently introduced us to the Bed & Breakfast way of doing things, and both hosts gave us solid tips to add to the already great information from our travel planners. They made the other guests feel easy to meet, too. There were regulars there that evening, and I can see why people come back. It was our first time traveling abroad on our own, my wife and I, and we arrived late, exhausted, and stressed. We needed more than a bed for the night. Philippe and Richard gave us reassurance, a good meal, a truly warm welcome, and the feeling of being nurtured. Over the next few days, Richard let me join his evening walks with Lennox, which helped with my homesickness for our dogs. One morning hot air balloons were just across the valley, and another day I played with Lennox on the patio. Our stay was more than comfortable.

Our family suite was airy and roomy, with a veranda facing the garden and pool. We were cycling through Aquitaine with bikes from Aquitaine bikes, and it was scorching on arrival day. Richard sent me a message suggesting a lovely local swimming spot where we could cool off along the way. That was such a thoughtful touch. Dinner was so good that after eating there on our first night, we booked a second night straight away. We can be shy about sitting with strangers, but Richard and Philippe made it feel like a fun dinner party. They’ve made a little paradise at La Belle Demeure, and you’re welcomed like dear friends. There’s so much thought in the details that make guests comfortable. I can’t really put into words how lovely it is. Aquitaine bikes was excellent too. Book it, you won’t regret it.

We’ve come back to La Belle Demeure several times, which is unusual for us, and loved it just as much again. There’s plenty to do around this beautiful part of France, with local towns and gardens to visit, and enough to keep our kids, aged 12 and 15, entertained. We tried some local restaurants, including the pizzeria within walking distance, but the food at La Belle Demeure was better. They very kindly catered for the three of us who are vegetarian. Richard and Philippe get every part of the stay right, from the atmosphere, food, and drinks to the cleanliness and their advice on places to visit or eat. They’re consummate professionals, but also friendly and relaxed, so it feels like a home away from home as well as a treat. We’re sure we’ll return before long. Wholeheartedly recommend it.

We explored nearby towns and chateaux, hired bikes, and kayaked on the Dordogne. There was wine too, of course. La Belle Demeure is in a lovely part of the world, and we had an amazing time there. Our room was stylish and beautifully presented. Richard, Philippe, and Lennox looked after us incredibly well, and the food was superb, much of it locally sourced. We’ll be back, thanks to all three of them!
