You get a lot of modern things in this historic place, including a lovely, well-stocked bibliothèque and a digital muséum, plus more ;)

You can enter for free, and there's a restaurant there that I'd recommend. The abbey was never completed, but you can climb its towers for lovely views over Saint-Jean-d'Angély and the countryside around it. The library is also inside.

Such a magnificent building. Shame I couldn't get inside to see it.

The place has even been used as a film set. These days it hosts lots of associations, including the music school and the Philharmonic Society, and there are open-air shows too. I saw Carmen here, and the Christmas market is coming up soon. It's a legendary spot with so much history.

The town's old houses and remains are sensational, and several films have been made here. It's a beautiful place that has kept all its charm.
