The condition of the room was uncomfortable in several ways. The bed advertised as a double was much smaller than a standard king and felt almost child-sized. The mattress and duvet held too much heat, so we woke up sweating more than once. Internet was poor and unreliable, especially in the evenings, and the TV had only basic channels with weak or no signal on most of them. We were given a different room from the one we booked. During our six days there, it was never cleaned. When we asked, the host said cleaning would cost another 50 euros, a charge we had not been told about beforehand. There was no hand soap, toilet paper, or basic bathroom and kitchen supplies either. Finding the room was a struggle. There didn’t seem to be any staff on site, and we spent nearly an hour wandering around trying to work out how to get in. The room was in another building that wasn’t properly marked, and we only located it with help from a fellow guest. At the entrance, there was also a very deep trench with no warning or barrier, where someone could easily fall and break a leg. The hot water heater leaked onto the microwave, creating a serious electrical hazard. This stay was very disappointing and fell short of basic hospitality and safety standards. I wouldn’t recommend the property without major improvements.

The location was fine, but for this price I’d choose somewhere else. The kitchen was modest, and every utensil was dirty. The room didn’t look like it had been cleaned either: there was a used napkin beside the bed, dust over every surface, and even spider webs in the lamps. It didn’t seem like they had any cleaning service at all. Not worth the price.

The rooms were warm and comfortable, and we were happy with the location, which made it possible to visit all three countries. For the price, the accommodation was quite decent. The one thing that could be improved was the cleanliness of the rooms.

The comfortable rooms helped us get a restful night before each day of exploring. Hotel Porte de France was also well placed for visiting nearby attractions. Everything was impeccably clean, and the friendly staff gave the hotel a warm, welcoming feel. I’d recommend Hotel Porte de France to travelers looking for a convenient and pleasant stay.

It’s close to Basel for the price, but there’s no reception, just a hallway with rooms, and not many places to eat nearby. Our room was large, though the bathroom stayed cold and the shower was tiny. Not great, not terrible.
