The cottage was clean for the most part, with comfortable bedding and a beautiful building. But the bathroom had exposed stone walls and spiders, and we had to bring our own bath and kitchen towels because none were supplied. The stay was dominated by the hosts' rules and intrusions. The only route to the garden was through a large common room packed with knick-knacks. We were told to keep the door locked, not open sunny-day windows in case the cat came in, limit dryer use because a clothesline was set up in the tall grass at the back of the garden, and stay within the area assigned to our apartment. They even left a blanket on the sofa while we were out, though we were traveling with children. When we showed that we were unhappy, they threw us out and called my husband an alcoholic. Their political views were on display from the moment we arrived.

The owner seemed very pleasant at first, and when I went a bit farther back to load a bike the following day, I was accommodated. After that, though, he kept his distance for the rest of our five-night stay. We had asked to skip breakfast because we were leaving at 6:00 a.m. That wasn't allowed, and we paid for a breakfast we never ate.

I can only give two stars for the website. I won't comment on how the owner welcomed us. Inside, it was colder than outdoors, so it was hard to get any warmth in. One of the bedrooms also had a damp, cellar-like smell. The owners kept giving us instructions: close the windows because of the cat, shut the shutters because of burglars, lock the door, and so on. It felt overly intrusive.

After the first night, the owner shut the building and wouldn't let us back into our room, despite having taken payment for four nights. We had to leave. He'd seemed nice at first, but became strange and aggressive, and the atmosphere with the family was awful. The room was advertised with a garden and kitchen, but we weren't even allowed to sit on the old, dirty plastic garden chairs. The sheets and towels smelled bad and were worn out. Avoid this place.

Domaine de Lara has a beautiful, unusual house in a magnificent setting, and we slept comfortably in the beds. We were warmly welcomed and enjoyed our stay. Thanks to you both for your hospitality, and all the best. Sylvie and Pascal
