Hôtel Sous les Figuiers

The room was spacious and very nice, and the hotel sits in a beautiful setting. The staff were friendly, and breakfast was nice, though the choices were limited. What spoiled our one night was waking up with countless insect bites on our arms, necks, and faces. It was a cool evening, so we hadn’t opened the door or any windows. We had large, itchy, bleeding welts for the next week, which affected our trip. I emailed the hotel to explain what had happened so they could address it for future guests, but never got a reply. That was very disappointing. At over $200 a night, I’d at least have expected an answer. Bring bug repellent.

The hotel is in a pretty, convenient setting, and the staff were delightful. We enjoyed the delicious breakfast. I stayed for two nights with a friend, in separate rooms. My friend could hear the couple next door talking through the thin walls. My room was detached and very quiet, but had no window that opened. After a shower it got very steamy, and there were signs and smells of damp. I ended up sleeping with the door open, and a cat came into my room late at night. Neither room had a full-length mirror.

We got helpful restaurant bookings and local tips from the staff, and the whole stay felt personal in a way a big hotel doesn’t. They were warm, easy to talk to, and made us feel welcome from the start. The property is set behind a tall gate, which is locked at night. Guests get a code and key, so we could come and go as we liked. It felt peaceful and secure, and there’s a lovely pool plus a few adorable cats wandering around the grounds. Our room was clean, comfortable, and well looked after. Breakfast each morning was fresh and tasty, and I especially liked having a coffee machine for a quiet start. We spent four nights at Hotel Sous les Figuiers. It’s a short, pleasant walk to shops, cafés, and great restaurants, so we could enjoy the area without driving. I’d happily stay again. It was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable hotels I’ve visited.

The rooms are set around the garden behind the main building, with outside seating where you can sit and unwind. Ours was clean and tidy, with a strong French feel, a small rustic walk-in shower, plenty of storage, and a comfortable, good-sized double bed. There’s air conditioning and a coffee maker, but no fridge. The Wi-Fi signal was good. This is a small, family-run, very rustic hotel in Saint Remy de province. We arrived around 10 pm, after reception had closed, but arrangements had been made for us to collect our keys. There’s private parking at the front, beside a small pool for guests. Breakfast is served in the main building, with local meats and cheeses and patisserie. The shops and bars are just a short walk away. I’d come back, hopefully for longer next time.
