I showed up at 11 am, as I’d said I would, but nobody was there to let me in. I’d booked well ahead, asked for early check-in, and shared my flight details. My driver spoke to someone at the hotel in French and was told they wouldn’t arrive until 3 pm. When I called, the person who answered said they only communicated in French, even though all my earlier messages had been in English and it was clear I speak English. The place looked grimy and poorly kept inside and out. Worse, they charged my Mastercard for one night as a no-show, even though I had arrived and couldn’t get in. I want my deposit refunded because I believe it was taken under false pretenses. I can accept when I’m at fault, but this felt like a scam. I can’t give the hotel even one star. Travelers, be careful booking here. I think the owners are taking money from people who book without realizing what they’re getting into.

The dining room looks lovely, and the food served there is just as good. It’s a peaceful, charming place whether you visit in summer or winter, and the service is warm and well handled. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite spots. I always have a wonderful time here.

Breakfast was good, but the rest was a mixed bag. The room was only somewhat comfortable, and there weren’t proper curtains, even in the bathroom. The TV and decoder were ancient, and none of us staying at the hostel could get the TVs to work. We were also meant to receive our invoices by email, but they never came, which was inconvenient for those of us who don’t live locally.

The building has an authentic feel and the setting is beautiful, but several small things kept Sunday lunch from being as enjoyable as it could have been. We were five people, and although the weather was lovely, there was just one parasol for the whole terrace. The sun was too strong, so we moved inside. Staff kept hurrying between the kitchen and the outdoor area, passing our table without a word or glance. There was only one other occupied table, so it felt a bit off during a lunch that should have been relaxing. We ordered three pieces of beef rare. Two came out more cooked than that. The young waitress, who was a trainee, kindly offered to replace them, but we kept them rather than waste the food. The other starters, mains, and desserts were good. When we paid, a different person at the till asked how everything had been. We said it was fine apart from the meat being overcooked, and she handed us the bill almost as soon as we’d finished speaking. Then she asked which wine we’d ordered. We said “Bordeaux Supérieur,” though we couldn’t remember the exact bottle name, and she didn’t seem pleased. She went back to the bottle left on our table so she could add it to the bill. The service wasn’t a disaster, but there’s room to improve. Asking how things went at payment should be a chance to listen to feedback and do better. A shame, given the lovely setting and authentic building.

The dishes were delicious, carefully made, and beautifully presented. Congratulations to the new chef at the Auberge du Jeu d’Arc! It was a lovely visit in a relaxed, pleasant setting, with a friendly and welcoming feel. Definitely a place to discover.
