La Villa des Consuls

The staff were so friendly and helpful. They booked several excursions and arranged taxis for me. Thanks, Valentin and Clois, I hope I can return one day. I stayed recently in the La Boetie apartment at La Villa des Consuls, tucked just behind the main street in the medieval part of Sarlat. It was the best hotel I’ve stayed in anywhere in France. The apartment had a separate sleeping area, a corner kitchen, comfortable seating and dining space, and a large terrace with a table, chairs, and sun loungers. Breakfast is optional, with a good selection of pastries, rolls, yogurt, fruit, and hot drinks from a self-serve machine. I’d highly recommend staying here.

The private patio just outside our entrance was a nice extra, and everything we needed was only a short walk away. Our “room” felt more like an apartment with two and a half rooms, fully equipped for a longer stay. Although the windows faced the main street, it was quiet inside. The staff were friendly, and after the smaller hotel rooms we’d had on our trip, this place was a treat. I’d suggest getting the optional garage space to make touring the region easier.

The location is extremely convenient, but the staff were rarely available. There weren’t many amenities, the toilet wouldn’t flush properly, there were no tissues, and we could hear the room next door.

There’s no on-site parking, and the paid parking is ten blocks away. You can’t drop off your car near the hotel, so be ready to carry your suitcases several blocks, then up a spiral wooden staircase with a loose rope handrail. There’s no elevator, and what they call the second floor is actually the third. We weren’t told about the lack of car drop-off until just days before we arrived. Ask for photos of your room first. This was the worst bait and switch ever. I can’t discourage people enough.
