Hotel Montaigne

The bike room was fantastic, the best we've come across in years of bike touring. Unfortunately, the rest of the hotel didn't match it. Our bed was very uncomfortable and the furnishings were sparse. The breakfast was uninspiring, the cleaning fluid smell was overpowering and set off my allergies, the WiFi was dreadful, and the closet had no proper hangers, only the kind that slot into a piece hanging from the rod. We were there for three nights in June 2024 during a bike trip. The location, just outside the medieval part of the city, is excellent. We booked a spacious studio with a patio, but the patio was a real disappointment: it faced the back lane, with no view or sunshine, and wasn't worth paying extra for unless you need somewhere to smoke. The hotel seems to be popular with motor coach tours, and groups coming and going made it busy and overwhelmed the breakfast room. We wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for a good night's sleep and a quiet hotel.

The rooms seem recently renovated, and they're modern, clean and affordable. Staff were friendly and helpful in several languages. Though it was January with little sun, we found a solarium on the first floor that made a nice spot for an afternoon snack. The hotel is just outside the old town, with easy walking access to everything. The boulangerie and cremerie across the street were fabulous, and the wine shop next door made it easy to put our snack together.

Cleanliness, location and friendly staff would have earned this a 4-star review, but the room temperature was a dealbreaker. The hotel advertises air conditioning, and it has it, but it's centrally controlled and set to 24C. We asked to lower ours to 20C, and probably should have asked for 18C, but were told 22C was the lowest. We requested that, though I'm not sure the room even got that cool. It was uncomfortably hot until about 6am, when we finally opened the window in the middle of the night. A hotel should give you a good night's sleep, and Hotel Montaigne failed us completely on that. When I see air conditioning advertised, I expect to be able to use it to get the room to a comfortable temperature.

A lovely little hotel right in the center of Sarlat le Caneda. I'd absolutely recommend it.
