The setting and the cultural, musical atmosphere around Sarzay made us dream of finding a little house nearby, maybe smaller than Le Porteau Enchanteur. We stayed there during the Chopin festival in Nohant and for a while afterward, and it really is enchanting. The cottage takes you out of your usual comfort zone, with the lived-in, authentic feel of 19th-century Berry peasant life. Our hostess, a former adventurer, even looks like George Sand, by coincidence? Like her, she settled in Berry de l'Indre. She is surrounded by wonderful, original artist friends, including Mr. Richard Hurbain, an extraordinary character who owns and restores the magical castle in the lovely village of Sarzay, which is absolutely worth visiting. Fabienne Compagnon made our stay very pleasant. She was available and so friendly.

Back home, I realized how much this stay had shifted my perspective. I can look up at the sky all I want now, but there are no more stars, and all the modern things around me seem to take up space for no reason. I don't want to live like this anymore. I want to embrace the spirit of Le Porteau Enchanteur. I'd stayed briefly a year ago, then came back for four days. Fabienne, the owner, is what gives Le Porteau its character. The history, antique furniture, and objects she displays so passionately matter too, but the place wouldn't feel the same to me without her. Each morning she serves breakfast in the garden and suggests places nearby to see. At night, the stars are a spectacle of their own, stirring the imagination and carrying you back in time. It was a fabulous stay.

Thank you, Fabienne, for that little trip back in time. Vintage may be in fashion, but it was such a pleasure to rediscover the enchanting lamppost, stretch out in crisp white sheets like in the old days, and look up at the pretty baskets and colanders decorating the ceiling 😉

That huge slice of bread and good coffee gave me the strength to carry on with my journey. The next morning, the owner served breakfast on antique tableware full of memories. She was friendly, caring, and easy to talk to, and she shared with passion what drives her. I found Le Porteau Enchanteur while walking the paths of Santiago de Compostela, and would gladly recommend it to curious people who are keen to try something new. Once you reach the top of the stairs and step through the door, it feels like being propelled into another world, taking a big leap into the past. Recreating this place took a long time, with research and wandering around nearby flea markets. Thank you for all of it!

A medieval-style guesthouse, with lovely decor, good equipment, and a comfortable feel. I'll start with a big THANK YOU for the warm welcome, your kindness, and the little gift. If you're after a quality stay with a rustic touch, this is the place.
