Auberge Du Père Bise

The location is fantastic, the service very good, and the breakfast was great, though at 45 euros per person. The rooms didn’t feel five-star. The first room was very small and warm, and its old air conditioning didn’t work. We moved to a second small room with a nice lake view, but the air conditioning failed again. The same thing happened about 12 years ago, so how can this still be happening? A tea on the terrace for 12 euros is out of range. We didn’t try the restaurant because there was nothing on the menu we liked.

I felt discriminated against at the lakeside bar, and that’s what I’ll remember from this stay. On Saturday, April 25, around 5:30 PM, I came back from a hike and was told at reception that the bar was full and I couldn’t enter. I said I’d spent the whole previous afternoon there without a problem, but the receptionist insisted there were no tables. The bar wasn’t full. The bartender overheard, recognized me, and let us in after the receptionist quickly apologized. I’d been staying at the hotel for three nights and had eaten at every restaurant on the property. The receptionist hadn’t asked if I was a guest. He looked at me, apparently decided I didn’t belong, and made up an excuse to keep me out. It’s hard to call that anything but breathtakingly stupid: he could simply have asked whether I was staying there. Instead, he lied to my face, even though I was an active guest at that moment. The restaurants were excellent, and much of the stay was enjoyable. But one staff member undid three days of otherwise outstanding hospitality in a split second. I have no interest in recommending a property where a guest can be profiled and lied to at the entrance to its own bar on a Saturday afternoon.

We spent three days in suite 41, which had a great lake view. The breakfasts were excellent, and so was the Michelin-starred restaurant, with its great chef Jean Sulpice. We had a fantastic stay and will come again. Andrzej and Agnieszka, Poland.

The restaurant had a nice lake view and good food, and the pool area was nice as well. The rooms were pleasant but a little small, and there was some construction noise in the morning.
