Hotel Chamois d'Or

The team gave us such a warm welcome, and the service was lovely. I fell in love with Hotel Chamois d’Or in Casterino and can’t wait to come back. The rooms are beautiful, with a lovely wood smell, and the landscape is stunning. And the food? Every meal was incredibly delicious.

The restaurant served tasty, refined dishes, though the portions weren’t very big. We also left some of our heavy luggage at the hotel while we went on a multi-day hike, which was a real help. We stayed for two nights while hiking around the Vallée des Merveilles. The room was pleasant and clean, and the surrounding mountains made for a wonderful view. We’ve had good hotel service on the Côte d'Azur before, but the reception here was unmatched for friendliness and helpfulness. We were very impressed.

The setting is stunning, and it’s a beautiful hotel with cosy rooms. The dining room and bar are inviting, and some of the staff were really good. Still, dinner service was odd, the food was below par, and some basic things were missing from the room. Enjoy the hikes into Mercantor, but perhaps eat somewhere else.

I arrived late in the afternoon, sweaty and dirty, after more than ten weeks hiking the VIA ALPINA red trail from Triest to Monaco. Casterino was a stop on my route, and I had no reservation. Carole at reception was incredibly kind and resourceful. She found me a quiet, comfortable room and a dinner reservation. Since there’s no grocery store or anywhere else to get food in the hamlet, Carole even put together nuts, fruit, and bread for me to take on my hike the next day. It made my day. Thank you!
