The balcony off my triple room was enormous, practically like a house deck, with a wonderful view to wake up to. My children and I loved our stay at Hotel du Midi. It’s right in the heart of town, across from the cathedral, with stunning views of the Alps. The family who run it were incredibly kind and made sure we felt comfortable. The beds were very comfortable, with soft bedding and fluffy pillows. The modern bathroom has a walk-in shower with great water pressure. I also liked having a separate bedroom with a door, so the kids could stay up later on their bunk beds. Their restaurant, the Petite Chalet, seems to be a favorite with locals and tourists alike.

The town is well placed for motorcycle tours, and the hotel is right in the center with covered motorcycle parking. There’s also a room for drying gear, though we didn’t find it until the next morning. Breakfast was big and served for a long time. Still, we left with a poor impression because the service was almost nonexistent until breakfast. Perhaps it was the off-season, but the hotel fell short of what we expected. We chose it over another Thones hotel because of the covered parking. We arrived soaking wet. A sign on the reception door sent us to the restaurant, which was closed. Luckily, someone opened the door for us, and our room key was on the front desk. We showered and changed, then I found an email with the door code and a note that reception would be closed. Sorry, but when I’m standing at the front door drenched, checking for an email sent about 30 minutes before our scheduled arrival isn’t the first thing I think to do. Mobile data was switched off while we came through Switzerland. We’d read the room brochures and hoped to eat at the restaurant in the same building that evening. Nothing said it would be closed, but it never opened. We had to walk to the other hotel restaurant in town, which was very good. It rained on our way back, and since we’d set out expecting to eat at our own hotel, we weren’t prepared and got wet again. The restaurant’s opening information was inconsistent: the brochure and display said it would be open, but hotel staff told us by phone it was exceptionally closed that day. At breakfast the next morning, we were told it was always closed on that weekday. The shower screen was far too low, the kind made for the edge of a bathtub, not a shower tray. Even a small person couldn’t avoid flooding the whole bathroom. The bathroom also looked like a home improvement project, with an uninsulated cable on top of the cabinet. Fine for one night, but it needs fixing. The brochures had wrong information. A simple “Exceptionally closed today” sign would have helped, and guests should be told at booking if the restaurant is normally closed that weekday. The Wi-Fi never worked.

A large room and friendly staff made this a great base for exploring the area.
