Hôtel du Théâtre

The sink wouldn't drain, so we had to brush our teeth over the bathtub, and there was no shower curtain, leaving water all over the floor. Reception shuts at 7:30pm, yet the hotel charged us an extra 15€ just to give us the keys after that. I wouldn't recommend calling this a hotel.

It's a two-star place, so keep that in mind, but I'd happily stay here again. The manager spoke English, which mattered to me, and deserves a special thank-you. The hotel is clean and the service is good. It's in a historic building beside the theatre, about a 10-minute walk from the train station. Plenty of sights are within walking distance, with restaurants and shops nearby too. We found a nice Irish bar, Pale, just three minutes away. Check-in at 1 pm is also unusually convenient.

The staff were really friendly, and the older building was kept very clean. We had a peaceful three-night stay in a charming hotel, well placed between the train station and downtown.

The room was so cramped that getting from one side to the other meant squeezing past the foot of the bed. In 34 degree heat, the broken aircon made that tiny space miserable. They brought a fan, but it barely helped and took up even more room. The stairs are also narrow and very uneven, something to consider in this very old building. We asked for hot water for tea one evening, then found at checkout we'd been charged to borrow a kettle. They didn't provide tea or coffee, and we had brought our own. Staff could be pleasant, though they had an edge at times and only worked specific hours. Despite our “do not disturb” sign, the cleaner knocked hard on our door on two mornings in a row, then came into the room while my husband was only half dressed and stayed much longer than she should have. We travel to France often, and this was easily the worst hotel we've stayed in. It was very basic and lacked even the usual amenities. I'd recommend staying elsewhere.
