Auberge de La Comtesse

We felt at home in this beautifully decorated little hotel. Our room was roomy, with two big beds and a view of the city gate. Breakfast came as a generous buffet, with lovely pain au chocolat, bundt cake and other cakes, all yummy. Dinner was excellent too, and the service was friendly.

The calm and charm of the hotel really won us over. We had a lovely stay, and want to thank all the staff for making us feel so welcome. We'll definitely come back. Mr. and Mrs. Lajogiannis, Chatelineau, Belgium

The staff were very friendly, and the restaurant was okay, though nothing special, with basic sauerkraut. The hotel itself has little charm beyond the name and photos. Rooms feel old fashioned, with dated faucets, an extremely cramped bathroom and furniture that isn't suitable. I wouldn't recommend it, and wouldn't rely on the website.

By the time we paid, after waiting 15 minutes, I went to the bar to settle the bill and complain. The owner's reply was, "We often get complaints..." Earlier, the service had been a mess, with waitresses repeatedly taking dishes to the wrong tables. There were 11 dishes sent back out of 27 covers. The meal was terrible: the shandy was disgusting, my friend's sparkling wine was stale and flat, and the sauerkraut with three kinds of fish came in a supposedly Riesling sauce that tasted like it might have had water in it. The salmon was frozen in the middle, the trout was awful, and my beef carpaccio was tasteless and smelled frozen. At the next table, someone ordered onion soup, but they got half a dozen snails instead and no soup. We spent an hour and a half laughing, or maybe just winding ourselves up. I'll stop there, or I'll spend all evening writing about it.
