For the price, we really couldn’t complain. The apartment was roomy, had everything we needed, and the balcony view was incredible. It was easy to reach the Charmasson lift in the morning and connect to the cable car by a blue run. Being able to ski right back in the evening was great, proper ski in, ski out.

Getting around with children can turn into quite an adventure. The chalets are near the Charmoisson slope, but a long way from the gondola, ski school and shops. Holidaymakers can’t use the parking spaces. And for anyone saying the gondola is 300m away, the round trip is “only” 3,200 steps.

Our CHAZD3 apartment had a lovely mountain view and was very well equipped, though there was so much furniture that we had to rearrange things just to get through the living room safely. It’s listed for six, but the two single beds in the living room are really guest beds. Four people fit fine; six would be very cramped. A few small problems were dealt with rather amateurishly: the shower head slid down during use, and the curtains fell as soon as I opened them. I fixed those myself to avoid more hassle. Les Chalets d’Arrondaz is a group of budget apartment buildings on the village’s north side. They’re technically on the slopes by the Charmason lift, but not close to the main Arrondaz lift, so we rented a ski locker there. Valfrejus is a charming village by French standards, compact and easy to get around on foot, about a 15-minute drive from the main road. The ski area is small but very affordable, and people were generally friendly and helpful. Our apartment was affordable too.
