The person at reception was completely unhelpful. We could tell she understood our English, but she deliberately replied quickly in French. We rarely run into this. We do try to speak French, but we’re here for four weeks and couldn’t take years of classes beforehand. She could have spoken more slowly to help us understand her French.

My experience was mixed. One day, a very nice woman explained everything and was helpful. When I came back the next day, it was just one refusal after another: no space, no bathroom access, no reservation for tomorrow, and no to everything else.

My partner and I regularly visit hot springs in the USA and abroad, so we made a special detour to Vichy. California also has a famous spring called Vichy, known for carbonated mineral water, which added to our interest. This was by far our most underwhelming visit. The only pool with natural thermal water, the “indoor pool,” was unavailable to us because numerous classes were using it. No one mentioned that at the front desk, or told us about the requirements: a tight-fitting speedo, shower cap and sandals. The place felt sterile, like a hospital, with little character and broken tiles throughout. The hot tub wasn’t even hot and was only comfortable for about two people.

At the front desk, we were told they don’t accept clients without medical appointments. It seems Vichy isn’t really a town for thermal baths anymore....
