L'écurie de Vieux-Moulin

The room was spacious and nicely decorated, and the front of the place looked good. Still, we left extremely disappointed. We’ve visited the Compiègne region three times now and always had good accommodation and a great experience before this. The owner, Le propriétaire, was a funny guy with a big smile, giving advice we hadn’t asked for, but he wouldn’t let us park there because we arrived a few hours before check-in. The previous guests had left at 11 and the next check-in was at 17, so there was space. At checkout, though, we had to wait 15 minutes and call someone to come out, even though checkout was before 11. The room was only half clean. The terrace access was covered in moss from the roof, there was a dead wasp on the doors, the backyard was bare, and the pillows were the worst I’ve ever seen. There were no bath towels, though that was clearly stated when booking. Why have vinaigrette in the room, a perfect architect table, and a bunch of books when there are no towels? People come here after cycling or hiking! It felt like a clear example of people wanting freedom while also wanting to earn money. They had plenty of rules for guests, but nobody here had a false smile or a role to play like this.

Right in the middle of the Compiegne forest, this traditional place serves good French food. The hosts were excellent.

There’s a wonderful historical atmosphere here, and the air feels very fresh. A magnificent place.

A quiet, pleasant spot, a bit away from the usual paths.
