Hôtel-Restaurant Monte d'Oro

My group included children, and they put together a lovely menu for all of us. The portions were big and the food fantastic. Service felt personal throughout, as you'd expect from a family-run hotel, and it was sublime. Right in the middle of the GR20, it's an ideal place for a break, or a good hotel option if you're here for a beautiful mountain hike.

I only ate at the restaurant. The food had no taste and no salt, and the lamb stew and potatoes were cold in the middle. One of the most expensive dinners in Corsica, and the worst restaurant meal I've had in years.

Coming in just for dinner, we passed through the salons and by a lit fireplace to reach the restaurant. The decor was unusual and homely, and I loved it. The staff were very welcoming and had a sense of humour. It seemed like everyone else in the dining room was staying overnight for the GR20. The menu could use more vegan and vegetarian options, which is why I'd give it 4 stars rather than 5, though we really enjoyed the aubergine entree. The Pasta aux legumes was fine, the warm bread rolls were nice, and the tiramisu was fantastic. Historic place, and I'd definitely come back.

After a long day's hike on the GR20, we arrived really looking forward to staying at the Gite. Instead, it was run down, the room and beds were dirty and smelly, there were bed bugs, the shower was broken, and the host was unfriendly. We also had lunch and dinner in the hotel area. The duck was raw, and when I asked for it to be cooked a bit longer, I was looked at as if I were crazy. The food was tasteless, overpriced, and didn't seem cooked with love. We saw other people send dishes back, too. I wouldn't recommend staying here.
