Château de Périgny, The Originals Relais

We’ve eaten here twice, and the service was completely different each time. The first visit was lovely, including a candle and a bit of effort for my son’s birthday. On the second visit, for my friend’s birthday, nobody acknowledged it at all, even with a bill of around 400 or 500 euros. The menu choices also felt limited. Our waiter initially said there was no coffee with milk, just a choice of beans, though we’d had milky coffee on our first visit. After we asked another staff member, coffee and cream arrived. Very disappointing.

The rooms were nothing like the website suggested: old, dirty, and really cold. It was 4 degrees outside, but the heating wasn’t turned on. The carpets were dirty throughout, and the radiator was rusty. There was no hot water for a shower, and if you’re over 1.80 cm tall, there’s barely room to fit and wash yourself. The restaurant was just as disappointing. When I asked about an English menu, the waiter rudely told me we were in France and I could use my phone to translate it. The pork was mostly clear fat, about three quarters of the piece, and cost nearly 40€.

We had a lovely, peaceful stay. The rooms were clean and very comfortable, and the restaurant, food, service, and atmosphere were all lovely. Thank you for a great time :)

There’s a lot to like here for the money: the restaurant, courtyard, pool and terrace, historic chateau, tennis courts, and horses. The place has real potential, but it could use some new ideas and investment. Since outside food and drinks aren’t allowed at the pool, a bar service there would make sense. Restaurant food was good, though the service was among the slowest I’ve experienced. Staff often sent us to someone else at reception or the bar when they could have helped themselves. The chateau and hotel buildings are charming, but dated and need care. I actually enjoy the nostalgic 90s and early 2000s decor, though most guests may feel it needs a full refurb. Wobbly door handles, scuffed paint, and cracked window panes need fixing.
