Logis Hôtel Restaurant Relais de la Mothe

The autumn menu leaned traditional French, and the dishes were cooked with care. There was a good wine list, local craft beer to choose from, and attentive staff. The landlady was lovely and very professional: she checked me in, showed me to my room, arranged a restaurant booking, and found a safe spot for my bicycle overnight. She even checked a couple of times that dinner was going well and I had everything I needed. I stayed at Hotel Relais de la Mothe last week during a long trip through France, and they were understanding when I booked the wrong dates online, honoring the booking for the dates I actually needed. I’d be very pleased to stay again when I’m next passing through. Thanks, Martin.

We had lunch on a Wednesday and ordered the menu du jour, but they’d run out of the starter, which seemed odd for a set menu. The pork was cooked nicely, and I’d recommend trying the strawberry soup, though a meringue with it would be nice. Service was quite slow and inattentive. The waitress seemed reluctant to serve our 20-year-old daughter wine, which we found strange. The setting is lovely, just what you’d hope for in a logis.

Just reviewing the restaurant. We were a party of four and everything was fine apart from my octopus, which was so tough I couldn’t eat it. I sent it back, but the replacement was inedible too. By then my friends had finished, so I ate the garnishes and left the octopus. They still charged the full €20 for it, with no apology. Very disappointing.

The staff were extremely helpful, and the room had lots of character and was very clean, with a modern ensuite. It’s a charming hotel in a lovely village. I liked the food, though I’d have enjoyed it more with some fresh vegetables on the menu, preferably green ones.
