The garden view was beautiful, and the walks around the area were just as lovely. We found several different routes back into town, with cattle grids that made us feel right on top of the world, and waterfalls down on the lower grounds. Even the rain didn't spoil anything. We stayed over Halloween with my best friend and had an incredible weekend. The fire was already lit when we arrived, so the living room was warm and cozy. They'd left fresh milk and a couple of eggs from their own chickens, and the drawers had all the cooking gear we needed. We only had to bring food and basic supplies. Huge thanks to the hosts, we loved our stay.

The cottage is lovely, with a beautiful setting and a nice layout. Julie and her cute collies were friendly, too. But the cold nights and early mornings really let the stay down. The heating never came on, so we went through four bags of logs, firelighters and paper. The central heating controls were inside a locked plastic box, which we'd never come across in all the cottages we rent. The skylight curtains were so thin that the early morning light woke us, and the cleaning needs work. I swept upstairs as requested before leaving and ended up with a big pile of dog hair, even though we didn't bring pets. I think I left the place cleaner than we found it. These issues seem easy to fix. If it had been warm, darker in the mornings and cleaner, I'd have given it five stars. 🥹

A good holiday was spoiled by what happened with the owners afterward. On our last day, the patio door mechanism broke and locked. We went out for the day, and when we got back we couldn't unlock the doors. Since it was our final night, we told the owners straight away so there'd be plenty of notice to get it sorted before the next guests. They thanked us and reassured us. A week later, though, money had been taken from our "good housekeeping" bond to cover the repair, supposedly because of "extreme misuse." There was no physical damage. Something inside had failed, which I'd guess was down to poor quality parts or installation. I wouldn't recommend staying here after that, the owners were dishonest. I'd also be cautious booking through Sykes Cottages, since their response felt very much like it wasn't their problem.

A lovely spot in the mountains, great for walking and cycling. The place had everything we needed and was very well equipped, and the beds were comfortable. There was also a lovely garden where we enjoyed the odd glass of wine.

We had much the same experience as the other recent review. They took £250 from the “good housekeeping bond” to repair something that was already in the condition we reported. It looks like guests are being made to pay for repairs to the property.
