We decided to return for dinner after stopping by in the afternoon with our dog, Dylan, for a pint outside and a pleasant view of the river Spey. The menu and friendly service had already made a good impression. They were busy, but found us an early table, and although we had it for two hours, we never felt rushed. The restaurant is tastefully decorated, with plenty around you to show this is a key whisky production area of Scotland. Everyone we met was lovely. They even made me a fantastic Negroni that wasn’t on the cocktail list. There’s a good choice of dishes, including options my pescatarian wife could enjoy, and veggies should have no trouble either. Everything we ate was excellent, better than meals I’ve had at some so-called high-end restaurants. Dylan was given water and biscuits and got lots of fuss on both visits. The two dog statues at the entrance are a good clue that this is a very dog-friendly place. We also tried one of the whisky trios, with drams grouped by flavour and offered at different prices. It was a reasonable way to sample a few, and made a nice pause between our main and pudding. We don’t usually eat out two nights in a row when travelling, but we’ve booked again for tonight. If you’re nearby and want a quality meal, great service and location at a reasonable price, don’t miss The Mash Tun Hotel.

Our top-floor room was quiet, with a beautiful view of the Speyside River. Before setting off on our Speyside Way hike to Aviemore, we stayed two nights at the Mash Tun and enjoyed the friendly staff and delicious food at both breakfast and dinner. We also had a tasting at Aberlour Scotch distillery and visited the Walker Shortbread Bakery and gift shop. A delightful place to stay before a long hike.

The duck at lunch was the best meal I’ve had in a long time, interesting and tasty, and great value. Don’t let the name put you off if you’re not a whisky drinker. The comfortable bar feels more like a restaurant, the ambience is high quality, and the service was friendly and professional.

The food was really good, especially the perfectly cooked seafood gnocchi and the mushroom-topped bruschetta. The mushrooms were lovely, though the bruschetta might have been just a touch too salty. The bartenders and servers were really nice, and the overall experience was great. We went in for a couple of whiskies and ended up eating too. The menu lists lots of whiskies, but we each had to ask for three or four before finding one they actually had. If you’re after more standard, popular whiskies along with good food, it’s a fantastic afternoon stop.

Chloe made delicious cocktails and mocktails, and we were impressed by the range in the cigar room and the knowledgeable information there. The Mush Tun isn’t local to us, but we’ll definitely come back. We had a table for nine booked for a birthday, and were warmly welcomed. Service was excellent throughout, and everyone found something they liked among the food and drinks.
